Foraging & Seasonal Tasting Menu
at The Potting Shed Restaurant
Lichfield, Staffordshire
A slow morning outdoors, learning to recognise wild food where it grows, followed by a carefully prepared seasonal lunch using local ingredients sourced from around Lichfield, Staffordshire and the surrounding counties.
It’s a few hours spent properly outside, taking time to notice, learn, and reconnect. We will sit down together around a shared table to eat well and exchange thoughts.
What the Day Looks Like
We begin at this beautiful and cosy restaurant, set in a cabin within a big garden village on the outskirts of Lichfield.
You’ll arrive to a relaxed welcome: tea, coffee, and a generous breakfast laid out on the table. We’ll take a few minutes to introduce ourselves, set expectations, and ease into the day. Then we leave the comfort of the table behind.
The Guided Foraging Walk
A short walk takes us through the garden centre and out onto a public footpath cutting through open grassland and hedgerow.
This is where things shift. The path is narrow in places. Grass grows high. Nettles and bramble don’t politely step aside. That’s part of the experience.
We’ll move slowly, stopping often. Looking closely at what’s growing: what’s edible, what’s not, and how to tell the difference with confidence.
You’ll learn through:
- Sight, smell, and taste
- Simple identification techniques
- Understanding habitat, not just memorising plants
This way we’ll build up confidence and familiarity.
On this landscape, we will mostly find wild herbs and green leaves, the kind that quietly grow underfoot and are often overlooked. But we may be lucky to find some berries in the right season. We’ll pick a few samples for further discussion, but we won’t harvest.
After around two hours, we make our way back. You’ll notice things differently: what was invisible at first starts to stand out.
The Tasting Menu
We return to the restaurant and sit down together around a communal table. You’ll be served a four-course seasonal lunch, prepared with carefully sourced local ingredients from the Lichfield area.
The menu changes with the season, but expect something thoughtful, well put together, and satisfying without being heavy. (You can view the actual menu for the day via the booking link further below.)
This isn’t fine dining in the formal sense. It’s good food, done properly: well presented, full of flavour, and rooted in the local landscape.
This is the time to enjoy your meal, but also to:
- Ask questions
- Revisit what we saw
- Share thoughts and observations
- Meet other participants
It’s where the day settles. Afterwards, you’re free to explore the rest of the garden village cabins, offering a range of locally made artisan products.
Who Is This For:
This experience suits people who:
- Enjoy being outdoors and don’t mind a bit of rough ground
- Are curious about wild food and want to learn in a practical way
- Appreciate good, seasonal cooking
It’s not designed as a gentle park stroll. The path can be uneven, muddy in places and overgrown with grass, nettles, and bramble.
You’ll need:
- Sturdy footwear (boots or similar)
- Clothing suitable for the weather
- A willingness to get slightly muddy
If that sounds like part of the appeal, you’ll feel at home here.
