Guided Foraging Walks
at Pype Hayes Park
Erdington, Birmingham (West Midlands)
What’s this Pype Hayes walk like?
This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly foraging walk through one of Birmingham’s larger green spaces, with over 100 acres of open fields, hedgerows, and the steady presence of Plants Brook along the park’s edge.
Over two unhurried hours, we follow easy paths through meadow grass, alongside the stream, and along tangled hedges. We move slowly, pause often, and take time to notice what’s growing underfoot, overhead, and everywhere in between.
This isn’t a march or a lecture. It’s a practical, grounded way to learn how wild plants fit into an everyday landscape, the sort of place most people walk past without really seeing.
We begin with introductions and a short briefing on safe, mindful foraging. From there, we walk and discuss the wild edible plants we find along the way.
These guided walks are designed to help you slow down, recognise edible plants with confidence, and understand how to use wild ingredients at home. We won’t be picking for the basket, but we will learn a lot and enjoy the time outdoors.
What You’ll Learn:
These walks are about noticing and understanding plants, not filling baskets or covering miles.
- How to identify 10–15 wild edible plants (and avoid their dodgy lookalikes)
- What’s in season now and how to find it again
- Simple culinary and herbal uses for the plants we meet
- How to forage safely, legally and respectfully
- Easy ways to cook, preserve, or enjoy wild ingredients at home
We’ll also look at common poisonous plants, so you leave knowing not just what’s useful, but what’s best left alone.
After the walk, you’ll receive a follow-up email with notes, links, and book recommendations, so you don’t have to memorise everything on the day.
