Foraging cookbooks are a key part of my culinary adventures as both a keen cook and wild food lover. They offer a chance to experiment in the kitchen and provide valuable insights into techniques, ingredient pairings, and how to make the most of wild food.

I turn to these foraging cookbooks for both reference—helping me understand an ingredient’s profile—and inspiration for creating new dishes.

When I return from foraging and can’t find a recipe for something I’ve picked, I get creative by looking up recipes for similar fruits and veggies and adapting them. That’s the beauty of wild food cooking—it’s all about personal taste and creativity.

List of Recommended Foraging Cookbooks

This classic book has been a go-to for foragers for over thirty years. I originally thought it was just a foraging guide, but was pleasantly surprised to discover it’s full of recipe ideas for when you’ve gathered the right ingredients.

It strikes a perfect balance between folklore, historical uses, plant, mushroom, and seaweed descriptions, and recipes.

The only downside is that some of the photographs feel a bit dated, but the recipes are still incredibly inspiring.

With stunning visuals and innovative recipes that use wild ingredients in unique ways, this book is a must-read for experienced foragers.

While beginners might find it a bit challenging, it’s still the best book on the subject. Even though some plants featured may not be found in the UK and Ireland, you can substitute them with native plants and apply the techniques—like dehydrating and fermenting—to any wild ingredient.

I stumbled upon this gem at my local library some years ago, and it’s been a delightful find.

Though not marketed as a foraging cookbook, it’s packed with nearly 400 recipes featuring almost 100 different plant species, all organised alphabetically.

First published in 1980, it’s since been fully revised and redesigned. The illustrations are beautiful, and the book offers basic information on where to find the plants and how to identify them. However, for more in-depth identification, other guides may be more useful.

Final Thoughts

Many foraging books—including those on coastal foraging—feature simple, beginner-friendly recipes. Cookbooks, however, dive deeper, focusing entirely on how to make the most of these wild ingredients.

Foraging cookbooks are a springboard, not a rulebook. They give you the know-how, but the real magic happens when you start tweaking, tasting, and making dishes your own. So, treat these books as a guide, trust your instincts, and most of all—have fun experimenting with wild food!
